Here we present a method of categorising frameworks and
The vertical axis ranges between the Theoretical and the
Detailed, while the horizontal axis ranges between the Simple and the Complex.
The green area illustrates a domain of balance between these
extremes, where the 80/20 rule applies and a good balance between simplicity
and complexity and between theory and detail is achieved.
The red area illustrates a range where these categorisations
stray too far into extremes and the opposite of the 80/20 rule applies.
The blue area illustrates a range between these points.
Zachman is an Ontology and is therefore
Simple & Theoretical. However, it could be said that it is too Simple and
too Theoretical to enable easy adoption. It effectively provides Contextual
TOGAF is very Detailed and Complex.
It could be said that it is too complex and too detailed to enable easy adoption.
It effectively provides Physical guidance.
There is a noticeable chasm between them. Before POET and
PEAF were created, many people found this chasm too wide to bridge. I have
heard people who have attended Zachman training, come out and say “OK, that’s
was a nice grounding. What the hell do I do now!? Where do I start!?”.
Similarly, I have heard people who have attended TOGAF training, come out and
say “OK, that’s was a huge amount of stuff. What the hell do I do now!? Where
do I start!?”
This chasm is what POET and PEAF were designed to fill.
POET is an Ontology and
therefore by definition tends towards the theoretical like Zachman. However,
POET is less theoretical than Zachman with an appropriate level of complexity
to make it easily usable. Zachman and POET do not
compete. They are complementary to each other. It is not a question of
Zachman or POET but more a question of Zachman and POET. It effectively
provides Conceptual guidance.
PEAF is a Framework and
therefore, by definition, tends towards the Concrete like TOGAF. However, PEAF
is less concrete with an appropriate level of complexity to make it easily
usable. PEAF and TOGAF do not compete. They
are complementary to each other. It is not a question of PEAF or TOGAF but more
a question of PEAF and TOGAF. It effectively provides Logical guidance.
In this way, POET and PEAF bridge the chasm between Zachman
