How was Training?

“A much better understanding of EA, great dialogue.” - Senior Systems Developer II, PPDI, USA, Sep 2010

“Yes - I think it helps understand what EA is all about.” - Solution Architect, Notarius inc., Canada, May 2010

Here we see the main sub-disciplines involved in Analysis & Design. Note that these disciplines are highly iterative and that iterations could take milliseconds inside someone’s head or could take weeks or even months.

The specific plan/process that will be followed is passed from the phase above.

Analyse

Here we take…

¨      the Target State (from the phase above). Because this is what drives us (and constrains us) structurally - Why are we doing it this way?

¨      the Current State (from this phase). Because this is our starting point as to what currently exists - Where are we starting from?

¨      the Current State from the phase below. Because this is our starting point as to what currently exists at the next level of abstraction - How “implementable” are our decisions

¨      the Refined Requirements from this Phase. Because this is the reason for us doing this. Why are we doing it?

This is accomplished in many ways, but one way is to use different types of abstraction (by Omission, by Composition, by Generalisation or by Idealisation) in effect, moving up the Abstraction hierarchy.

Design

Here we take…

¨      the Target State (from the phase above). Because this is what drives us (and constrains us) structurally - Why are we doing it this way?

¨      the Current State (from this phase). Because this is our starting point as to what currently exists - Where are we starting from?

¨      the Guidance, High Level Plan for Subsequent Phases, and the Target State (from the phase above).

¨      the Refined Requirements from this Phase.

and use them to create

¨      the Target State for this phase.

¨      a detailed plan for the next phase and high level plan for subsequent phases.

¨      guidance to be used by the next phase.

This is accomplished in many ways, but one way is to use different types of abstraction (by Inclusion, by Decomposition, by Specialisation or by Realisation) in effect, moving down the Abstraction hierarchy.

Assess…

¨      Here the Design is assessed and the reasons for it are recorded.

Following this discipline, the Governance & Lobbying discipline is utilised to ensure that the work done is fit for purpose and that any problems or opportunities that have been discovered by performing it are documented and raised for resolution.

How does this discipline map to your Enterprise?

Does the discipline your Enterprise uses include all of these required inputs and outputs?

If not, what do you need to change? Who is Responsible for making them? And who is Accountable for making sure the changes are made?
